WHAT WE POUR IN HUMBLE
Driveways, patios, and slabs in Humble
Driveways
New driveways, full replacements, widenings, and RV pads. Four inches minimum for cars, thicker where the load calls for it, and the approach reinforced the way Humble's packet spells out. The full method is on our concrete driveways page.
Patios
Broom, exposed aggregate, stamped, or stained, with the fall set so water runs away from the house. Getting concrete into a backyard is its own puzzle, so we work out truck or pump access before pour day. See our patio finishes.
Slabs and foundations
Garage and shop slabs sized to the building. For a new home, Humble wants a soil report and an engineer-stamped pier design, and our foundation crews pour from exactly those documents.
THE HUMBLE PERMIT PICTURE
Its own city, its own permit desk
Humble is an incorporated city. Concrete work here goes through the City of Humble's Building & Inspection Department, not Houston's permit center and not the county, and the city lists concrete among the work it wants to see plans for.
The residential plan packet is more specific than most. Pads, driveways, and slabs need two sets of plans showing rebar size and spacing, and silt fencing goes up on the job. All that paperwork adds a step before a Humble pour, so we build the city's review time into the schedule from the start.
If you'd rather not touch the paperwork, we'll draw the plans the city wants and walk you through the submission. The plan work shows up as a separate item on the quote, so you can decide. Our Humble permit guide walks through the whole packet, fees and inspections included.
OUR CREWS · STEEL AND FINISH
What a finished approach and a clean grid look like
Two jobs from around greater Houston, not Humble jobs: a finished driveway, and rebar on chairs before the pour.
THE GROUND UNDER HUMBLE
Sandier on top, clay in places
People assume all of greater Houston sits on the same black clay. Humble doesn't, quite. The 1976 county soil survey took two of its reference samples near US-59 and FM 1960, a fine sandy loam and a loam. Plenty of lots still have a clay layer underneath that swells when it's wet and shrinks when it dries.
A side note we found while reading that survey: the land around Humble sits a little higher than it otherwise would, pushed up by the Humble Salt Dome, with the salt roughly 1,200 feet down. It doesn't change how we pour. We just liked knowing it.
So we look before we quote. The base itself doesn't change: subgrade stripped, select fill compacted in lifts, rebar on chairs, all of it photographed before the concrete hides it.
WATER COMES FIRST
The floodplain question
Humble asks owners to research the 100-year and 500-year floodplain before any work inside it. For a new home outside the floodplain, the slab still has to sit at least a foot above the nearest street crown or sewer manhole, whichever is higher.
We pull that up for your lot before we set a single grade stake. It's one of the first steps in how we work.
- Compacted select fill under the slab
- Fine sandy loam near the surface
- Clay in places below
- Slab height above the street crown: 12 in. minimum
- Water steered away from the slab

Permit and floodplain rules change, and the City of Humble's Building & Inspection Department has the final word for your address. We last checked the rules on this page in September 2026. This is general information, not legal advice.
HUMBLE QUESTIONS
Asked around Humble
Do you pour concrete in Humble, TX?
Yes, across Humble's 77338 and 77396 ZIP codes. Most Humble jobs start with the city's plan packet, so tell us the address first and we'll know which drawings the job will need.
Do I need a permit for a driveway in Humble?
Usually, yes. Humble is an incorporated city with its own Building & Inspection Department, and its residential plan packet asks for two sets of plans showing rebar size and spacing on concrete pads, driveways, and slabs. We look up what your address needs and draw the plans the city asks for.
What does Humble require for a driveway approach?
Humble's plan packet says the first ten feet of the approach, the stretch that meets the street, must be reinforced with #4 rebar spaced 12 inches on center. We draw that into the plans for your submission, so it's settled before the forms go up.
Does a backyard patio in Humble need plans too?
Usually. Humble's packet lists concrete pads, driveways, and slabs together, and a patio is a slab on the ground, so plan on the same two sets with the rebar shown. We confirm with the city for your address before we bid, since the desk has the final word.
Is the soil in Humble the same as central Houston?
Not exactly. Around US-59 and FM 1960 the old county survey found a fine sandy loam rather than the heavy black clay of central Houston. Clay can still sit lower down, so the site visit decides how the base gets built.
What if my Humble lot is in a floodplain?
Then it gets looked at before anything else. Humble asks owners to research the 100-year and 500-year floodplain before starting work inside it, and new homes there have to be raised above the 500-year level. We check your lot against the flood maps before we plan grades or bid a foundation.
