The slab is the last
layer we build.
Everything that decides how long your concrete lasts happens before the truck arrives: the subgrade, the compacted base, the steel sitting on chairs at the right height. By pour day the outcome is mostly settled. The concrete just makes it permanent.
It's also the part of the job that disappears from view the fastest, which is why we keep a record of it: we photograph the base and the steel before the pour covers them, on every job.

The standard we build to
Each line says what we do, why it matters in Houston soil, and what you can look for on the job. The initial boxes are there because this page is meant to be printed and kept. If it helps you compare bids, even better. Mostly, it's how we hold ourselves to the work.
ACT I · LINES 01–03
The ground

Subgrade preparation
We strip topsoil, sod, roots, and anything organic down to soil that can carry a slab, then compact what's left. Houston clay moves with moisture, and a slab poured over soft spots or buried vegetation moves with it.
What to look for: clean, compacted soil at the form edge on pour morning, with no grass or roots in sight.

Compacted select fill base
Select fill placed in lifts and mechanically compacted: a compactor doing the work, not truck tires driving over it. Depth is sized to the job and stated on the quote. The base is the slab's real foundation; the concrete only performs as well as what it sits on.
What to look for: compaction equipment on site doing the work, not just truck tires.

Vapor barrier where it belongs
Enclosed slabs (garages, shops, additions that will be lived in) get a poly vapor retarder under the concrete to stop ground moisture migrating up through the slab. Exterior flatwork usually doesn't need one, and we'll say so instead of billing for plastic your patio doesn't want. A spec includes knowing where not to add cost.
What to look for: on an enclosed slab, poly visible over the base before the pour.
ACT II · LINES 04–06
The pour

Steel: rebar on chairs
Deformed rebar tied into a grid and set on chairs so it sits in the middle third of the slab, where it can actually hold cracks tight. Size and spacing are stated on your quote and checkable at the forms. Steel lying in the dirt at the bottom of a pour is doing almost nothing but costing you money.
What to look for: steel sitting up on chairs before the pour, not lying flat on the ground.

The mix: 3,000–4,000 PSI by application
3,000 PSI, the industry standard, is our floor on every pour. Where the load or your spec calls for more (heavy vehicles, commercial work, an engineer's callout) we order 3,500 to 4,000. The mix comes from a batch plant with a ticket we can show you. And we never add water beyond what the mix design allows. The ticket states the limit, and drowning concrete to make it easier to push is the fastest way to kill the strength you paid for.
What to look for: a batch ticket you can see, and no extra water going into the truck.

Thickness by application
Four inches minimum on residential flatwork. Want it deeper, or does the load call for it? We pour thicker on request, priced as its own line on the quote, and commercial work is sized to its loads. The thickness is on the quote, and it's measurable at the form boards before a yard of concrete arrives. Bring a tape; four inches should be four inches.
What to look for: form boards set to the thickness on your quote. Bring a tape if you'd like; we don't mind.
ACT III · LINES 07–09
The finish

Finishing
Screeded to grade, floated, edges tooled, then broom finished for traction unless you've chosen a decorative surface. Finishing is timing discipline as much as skill: working the surface while bleed water still sits on it traps that water under the finish and makes surfaces flake and dust later.
What to look for: a crew that waits for the bleed water to leave before finishing begins.

Saw-cut control joints
Concrete cracks. Joints decide where. We saw-cut as soon as the slab can take a saw, usually the same day, sometimes the next morning; the concrete decides. Depth about a quarter of the slab's thickness, spacing planned to the slab's dimensions (the rule of thumb is two to three feet per inch of thickness), panels kept close to square. Random cracks are what a slab does when nobody gave it instructions.
What to look for: joints cut early, before random cracks pick their own path.

Curing
Strength comes from the cure, not the pour. Concrete needs its moisture held in while it hardens: cure compound or covering, applied the same day. Foot traffic after 24 to 48 hours, vehicles after about 7 days, full design strength at about 28. You get the cure schedule for your slab in writing at walkthrough, so nobody guesses with a week-old driveway.
What to look for: a cure schedule in writing, so nobody has to guess.
STEEL 101
Rebar vs. mesh: where the difference actually lives
First, some friendly honesty about how this works: steel doesn't stop concrete from cracking. Nothing does. Steel's job is to hold the cracks that form so tightly closed that they never open, shift, or grow. It can only do that job from the middle of the slab.
Wire mesh has legitimate uses when it's properly supported. In practice, though, the sheets tend to get walked down into the mud during a pour, and lifting them back into place mid-pour is a hard thing to do well. Rebar tied on chairs doesn't depend on anyone's memory mid-pour. It stays where it was placed, under boot traffic and all, and it can be photographed in position before the first yard hits the forms. That's how we do it, on every job.

THE PART OF THE BID YOU CAN'T SEE
Base prep is where bids drift apart
When two bids for the same driveway are thousands of dollars apart, the difference is almost never the concrete. Concrete is the visible part. The gap usually lives underground: stripping the subgrade, hauling in select fill, compacting it in lifts, setting steel on chairs. That work costs real money in machine time and labor, and it disappears from view within hours of starting.
Trim that work and a bid drops fast, and on pour day the two driveways can look identical. The difference tends to show up in year three or five, when Houston clay swells with a wet spring, shrinks through an August, and a slab without support starts to crack and settle. Fixing it then costs far more than the base prep would have. That's why we're glad to break your quote out on request and walk you through what each line is doing for your slab.
You don't have to take our side of that table on faith. We photograph the base and the steel on every job before concrete covers them, and the photos are yours to keep. That's the process, and it's the reason this page exists: we'd rather show you the work than ask you to trust a promise.
